Sri Lanka spends Rs. six billion for chemical fertilizer annually

Compost - image via WikipediaSri Lanka imports Rs 6 billion worth of chemical fertilizer to the country annually and the Government plans to curtail chemical imports by 25 percent in the next three years, Deputy Director (Research) and Executive Coordinator Ministry of Agricultural Development and Agrarian Services, Prof. Hemantha Wijewardena said. A three year pilot project on organic fertilizer production and use, funded by the Treasury has been begun because it had been proved that use of chemical fertilizer alone cannot increase the yield in any crop. Senevirathna said in the parliament on June 23, 2009 that a Memorandum of Understanding will be signed with India in this regard. IMF may profit from bailouts

March 10, 2009 (The New York Times)WASHINGTON — The International Monetary Fund may turn a profit of almost $650 million next year, enriched mostly by emergency loans to East European countries, according to former IMF officials.The windfall would mark a $1 billion turnaround for an organization forecast two years ago to lose $360 million in 2010.
