(September 12, 2009) A team of agricultural experts from India will visit Sri Lanka next week to help in rehabilitation of displaced people in the north of the island nation, External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna said on Thursday.
"Recognising the importance of restoring livelihoods, we are also going to assist Sri Lanka to revive agriculture in the north," Mr. Krishna told the Editors' Guild.
He said India's "immediate focus is to see that the process of resettlement and rehabilitation of more than 2.7 lakh internally displaced persons in their original homes is achieved as early as possible."
Next week, he said, a delegation from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) will visit Sri Lanka "to have extensive discussions with stakeholders in Sri Lanka on the specifics of our agricultural assistance".
India has already allocated Rs. 5 billion for the relief and rehabilitation of the displaced people and also assisted in de-mining former conflict areas.
